April 8, 2021—Washington, D.C.—Peter W. Thomas, J.D., has been elected the new President and Managing Partner of Powers, effective April 1, 2021. Peter succeeds Jim Jorling, J.D., who has served in the position since 2016.
Peter joined Powers in 1991 and has been a Principal in the firm since 1996. He works closely with the firm’s legislative and healthcare practices, focusing on disability and rehabilitation policy, Medicare coverage and reimbursement, medical rehabilitation services and technologies, and other areas of healthcare policy. Peter has served on the firm’s Executive Committee several times and worked on many important matters for the firm, including recruitment and marketing. As an attorney who has practiced with Powers since its early days, Peter has a strong understanding of the firm’s competitive advantages, deep bench of expertise in health care, education, and tribal law, and is well-equipped to help the firm thrive through organic growth and lateral recruitment.
Jim Jorling was elected President and Managing Partner in April 2016 after 12 years with Powers. As Managing Partner, Jim has guided the firm’s growth the past five years and maintained a positive work environment for all Powers employees. Under his leadership, the firm has endured the COVID-19 pandemic and continued thriving through a very difficult year. Along with the executive committee, Jim oversaw the firm’s quick transition to remote work in 2020. While many firms were forced to undergo layoffs, Powers has persisted without major cutbacks or interruptions to the firm’s operations—a testament to Jim’s leadership. Jim remains a Principal in the firm’s healthcare practice, where he advises on Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, Medicare Managed Care, telemedicine regulations, healthcare privacy and security laws, and more.
Powers thanks Jim for his many contributions during his time as Managing Partner. The firm looks forward to continuing to serve its clients under Peter’s leadership, along with an Executive Committee comprised of Sherry Gray, Joel Rudnick, Ron Connelly, and Brian Gunn, all principals at the firm.
