Katherine Demedis is an attorney in Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville's education practice.

Katherine Demedis has a unique viewpoint on the practice of education law, having spent three years teaching in New York City as a Teach for America corps member prior to law school.

Katie’s “insider’s view” informs how she works with and for clients, knowing as she does that understanding the relevant laws and regulations isn’t enough – it is also critical to grasp the practical application of both and the nuances involved in finding workable solutions to problems. In addition, her firsthand experience working in an educationally underserved area makes her well aware of the unique challenges that face schools serving these student populations.

Katie advises educational institutions regarding compliance with state and federal standards and accrediting agency standards. She actively monitors legislative, regulatory, interpretive guidance, and other developments on a variety of federal education matters allowing her to provide exceptional support and insight to her clients.

Katie's experience also includes:

• Assisting educational institutions in preparing for Department of Education program reviews and site visits from accrediting agencies, responding to program reviews, audits, and accreditation reports and actions, and finding ways to limit liabilities or sanctions following a program review or accrediting agency determination.
• Advising schools concerning compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act Regulations, which gives students access to their education records and some control over the disclosure of information from these records.
• Counseling clients on compliance with various Department of Education regulations, including but not limited to, incentive compensation requirements, credit hour and clock hour policies, and student and school eligibility for Title IV.
• Representing clients in interactions with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense, including advising on tuition eligibility and assisting in audit reviews and responses.
• Assistance in other related areas such as investigating an institution’s compliance with Title IV regulations, conducting diligence for mergers and acquisitions and guiding institutions through a change of ownership/control process.
• Providing guidance to institutions about compliance with the Clery Act and Title IX, as well as related regulations and guidance.
