A panel of Powers Senior Counsel discussed their legal careers and provided advice to the firm’s attorneys and professionals as part of the firm’s summer associate event series.
Harry Damelin, Joel Hamme, Mary Susan Philp, Jim Pyles and Bob Saner served on the panel, as Principal Peter Thomas moderated. All panelists were asked to share why they entered the legal profession; why they chose to practice at Powers; what advice they would give to the attorneys; and what advice they would give to their younger selves.
The panel all agreed that it is important to enjoy the work you do and time spent with your peers. They urged attendees to follow their passions, take advantage of every opportunity to learn and to take chances.

Harry Damelin represents companies and individuals during all phases of criminal, civil false claims, and administrative investigations and proceedings brought by federal or state law enforcement authorities and regulatory agencies. He is experienced in representing clients in connection with U.S. Senate and House congressional investigations and in conducting corporate internal investigations relating to alleged employee misconduct.
Joel Hamme has spent his career providing advice and counsel to long-term care providers on such matters as Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, provider licensure and certification, litigation, and issues for providers under the Affordable Care Act. Additionally, he has served as president of the American Health Lawyers Association.
Mary Susan Philp has more than 30 years of experience in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement and compliance matters. She is highly skilled in representing clients before the Provider Reimbursement Review Board on a variety of reimbursement issues, as well as negotiating settlements of appeals with Medicare administrative contractors.
Jim Pyles is a co-founder of Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville and has more than 40 years of experience in litigation, counseling, and lobbying in the field of health law and policy. He is nationally known for his expertise with legal issues related to health information technology and health information privacy, chronic care coordination, home health, hospice, and ambulatory care services.
Bob Saner represents physician organizations, including professional societies, associations, medical groups, academic practices and integrated systems; municipal water utilities; and institutions of higher education. Prior to joining Powers, he served in the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and the Executive Office of the President.
