Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville is pleased to announce that Sean Beller has been promoted to Principal, effective January 1, 2018.
As an associate in the Education practice, Sean established expertise in both higher education and litigation matters. Sean’s experience extends to nearly all areas of the educational practice, including conducting investigations, negotiating and drafting purchase agreements, responding to OIG audits and program reviews, and responding to CIDs and subpoenas.
Sean also has experience conducting diligence in connection with acquisitions of higher education institutions and drafting regulatory analysis for discreet client issues related to the federal, state, and accrediting agency regulation of higher education institutions and service providers.
Sean has represented schools in a variety of litigation settings ranging from the arbitration of student complaints to defending schools against False Claims Act whistleblower suits in federal court.
Sean has been an attorney at Powers for eight years and has been practicing law for 11 years. He earned his juris doctor at George Washington University after graduating from College of William & Mary with a Bachelor of Arts.
Sean will join Education Principals Stanley Freeman, Sherry Gray and Joel Rudnick.
Stanley Freeman joined Powers in 1994. He is the former president of the firm and founder of the firm’s education practice. He counsels postsecondary educational institutions from all sectors of higher education regarding strategic issues pertaining to participation in the federal student financial assistance programs, accreditation, licensure, and related regulatory concerns.
Sherry Gray is a regulatory specialist with more than 26 years of experience in higher education. She advises colleges, universities, and other postsecondary institutions on all aspects of state and federal laws and accreditation standards applicable to institutions and their partners. She also helps defend clients against adverse actions initiated by government and accrediting agencies and counsels clients on mergers and acquisitions.
Joel Rudnick has focused exclusively on representing universities, colleges, and other postsecondary schools, service providers, investors and lenders on compliance, litigation and transactional matters since 1992. He advises clients on compliance issues arising out of all aspects of the federal, state, and accrediting agency regulation of public and private postsecondary educational institutions, with a primary focus on Title IV federal student aid matters.
Powers works closely with educational institutions across the United States and abroad. Clients include private nonprofit colleges and universities, public institutions of higher education, privately owned and publicly traded schools and school systems, secondary school systems, private equity firms, lenders, service providers and others active in postsecondary education.
