President Trump signed into law the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Act (EHDI Act), S.652, a bill that Peter Thomas, JD and Leif Brierley, MPH of the Powers Government Relations and Public Policy team worked to advance on behalf of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance.

The EHDI Act is bipartisan legislation that will help ensure continued funding and support for early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of hearing loss in newborns, infants, and young children. The full text of the legislation can be found here.

ACI Alliance collaborated with a coalition of national organizations and the bill’s champions in the House (Representatives Brett Guthrie, R-KY and Doris Matsui, D-CA) and in the Senate (Senators Rob Portman, R-OH and Tim Kaine, D-VA) to advance the bill through Congress.

ACI Alliance advocated for language that was incorporated into the legislation emphasizing the importance of parents receiving accurate and comprehensive information about the hearing technology and communication options available to their child.

The Powers Government Relations and Public Policy team is led by Principals Peter Thomas, Bobby Silverstein and Peggy Tighe. Through the team’s work, clients have successfully advocated for and passed legislation, testified before Congressional committees, modified key regulations, developed strategic direction, defeated threats to patient access, built strong and enduring coalitions, and fostered long-standing relationships with policymakers.

The team represents trade associations, nonprofit organizations, coalitions, physicians and other health care professionals, hospitals and hospital systems, health technology providers, and a wide range of post-acute care and ancillary service providers and suppliers.

Powers has a strong concentration of rehabilitation and disability clients, and the team advocates for consumer groups and diverse coalitions serving the needs of individuals with injuries, illnesses, disabilities and chronic conditions.
