Powers Principal Bobby Silverstein recently provided a keynote briefing regarding disability laws in the United States to a delegation of disability rights advocates and social entrepreneurs from Russia.
The event was held on behalf of the International Visitor Leadership Program, which is the U.S. Department of State’s professional exchange program. Current and emerging foreign leaders in a variety of fields experience the United States firsthand through short-term visits and meet with their American counterparts.
The program for the six Russian disability rights advocates and social entrepreneurs provided an overview of federal, state and local legislative measures that support people with disabilities ― particularly those with Down syndrome and autism spectrum disorders ― in the areas of education, housing and employment.
Bobby presented about the history of the disability rights movement in the United States, including the bipartisan negotiation process that led to the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Bobby has negotiated and drafted bipartisan legislation, and was known as the “behind-the-scenes architect” of more than 20 bills enacted into law, including the landmark ADA law.
